It’s the one national park unit you can’t technically visit. The National Park Service includes Hohokam Pima on the official list of park units, but does not include any travel information or location listings elsewhere online. The land is under tribal ownership, and the Gila River Indian Community has decided not to open the area to the public. Today, the Monument rests on the Gila River Indian Reservation. The fence passes directly over the peak-a large wooden post holds up. After climbing about 1/3 of the distance to the summit, we stopped to rest at a small peak. The west side has several small cliffs which make it a poor route. There is no trail going up on either side. The terminology I use here is standard among Hohokam lithic ana lysts. After the excavations, Snaketown was covered entirely, leaving nothing of the ruins or city visible above ground. It may be easier to go up the east side of the mountain, but Im not sure. Some of these are on display at nearby Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. This ancient village, which may have had as many as 2,000 inhabitants, is within the Gila River Indian Reservation near Sacaton, Arizona. Basically any weapon with a sharp tip is a projectile. It’s also believed that up to eight areas at the site were used as crematoria, a practice among the Hohokam people. Hohokam Pima National Monument recognizes the significance of Snaketown, a Hohokam village inhabited from about 300 AD to around 1200 AD. Based on the excavations, it’s believed the Hohokam people inhabited Snaketown during the Pioneer and Early Sedentary stages (approximately 300 BCE to 1100 CE). Like many of Arizona’s archaeological sites, excavations began in the 1930s and again in the 1960s by Euro-American settlers and researchers.
